Teen icon Sandra Dee, top star of the late 50’s and early 60’s, faded into obscurity with the advent of a new permissive Hollywood.

Well known for “A Summer Place”, “Gidget” and “Imitation of Life”, all released in 1959.

What most people aren’t aware of is that Dee attempted to break out of her image with “The Dunwich Horror” (1970.) Briefly, it is an evil horror film co-starring Dean Stockwell as the last member of a dying sect of devil worshippers. He is in search of a book containing incantations meant to conjure up Satan himself. He also uses Dee to gain access to this book – and has plans for her to carry on his family lineage.

For me, the most memorable thing about the movie is Miss Dee, who is never more beautiful. It’s unbearably sad that Hollywood would pretty much ignore her after this last role in a major release.

Following this, Dee would guest star in television roles, notably in “Love American Style”. (Episode titled “Love and the Sensuous Twin” 1972.) Again, she is gorgeous beyond words as a split-personality who is half conservative, half a wild and sexy thing.

Eventually, she would stop acting altogether, becoming an anorexic recluse. No one knows what demons she had to overcome – being molested by her stepfather and the death of her ex-husband singer-actor Bobby Darin (1973), something she never got over.

Her last acting role was with friend and frequent costar John Saxon in “Love Letters”, a stage play. (1991)

Death came in 2005 from kidney disease, age 62.

Sandra Dee belongs to an era of actresses from a more innocent time, the kind we’ll never see again.

On Feb. 12, 1976, actor Sal Mineo was stabbed to death while returning from rehearsals for an upcoming play in L.A. What was the motive for his murder? Since writing the first article, new information leads to the reason.

First, let’s dispense with the false rumor that Mineo was killed by a gay lover. This is the scenario police were going before Lionel Ray Williams was arrested.

Secondly, we know who did it. Williams spent fourteen years in prison for the crime despite his denials. His ex-wife informed police.

The official modus operandi: that it was a failed robbery attempt. The LAPD’s theory fails. Williams could have overpowered Mineo and taken his wallet. Why stab him, then not take his wallet?

The most likely cause: Sal Mineo was said to have owed the wrong people drug money…and he refused to pay them back. Williams was hired by them to exact street justice. He would never inform on them.

A sad post-script. The year before Sal’s murder, he was set to star as Sirhan Sirhan in “RFK Must Die” (to be directed by Orson Welles.) Unfortunately, Welles would cause the project to fall apart by continually asking the producers for more money.

“My Friend Dahmer” Review

Originally beginning as a 24 page comic book, “My Friend Dahmer” eventually evolved into a 220 page graphic novel (2012) and then a motion picture (2017.)

The original self-published comic book.

“Dahmer” concerns the high school years of future serial killer Jeffery Dahmer, who would go on to murder seventeen young men between 1978 and 1991.

Author Derf Backderf, a classmate of Dahmer’s, painstakingly goes over the details of this crucial time (Adolescence in the 1970’s.) Dahmer’s beginning insanity – saving roadkill and dead animals in jars – is a precursor to what he would do to human beings.The MSM, ever vigilant in protecting the image of the homosexual, has glossed over WHY he killed his victims. Dahmer, who was gay, would sexually pleasure himself with the dead bodies. It reached the point where the bodies were cannibalized, so “they’d always be with him.” His goal was to create a zombie slave.

The graphic novel points out that the adult world ignored all the warning signs this madman was giving out – his parents, his teachers, everybody. This failure is partially blamed on the times, the more tolerant 1970’s, compared to the fanatical cancel culture-snowflakes of our current day.

“My Friend Dahmer”, the graphic novel, is funnier than the film, especially for those who lived through those times and remember how accurately Backderf gets it. The movie is not so funny, something is lost in the translation, but it’s reasonably faithful to its source. It also captures the look and feel of the not-so-feel-good 70’s. What makes it work is a spot-on performance by Ross Lynch – the sad outcast who, for a short time, has an ironic “fan club” based on his weird fake fits he throws, pretending to be an out-of-control spastic.

Nothing sums it up better when one of the faculty discovers Dahmer posing with the school’s honor roll for the yearbook picture. She ruthlessly scribbles out Dahmer’s face with a black marker and the picture is run that way. What better way to sum up why someone goes off the rails?

George Lindsey portrayed Goober Pyle on “The Andy Griffith Show” and “Mayberry RFD” from 1964 – 1971.

Known as a lovable goofball who pumped gas, in one notable episode, Goober returns from a hunting trip wearing a beard. Mayberry’s citizenry comments on what a great change the beard makes – that now he appears “intelligent”.

Goober takes this to heart. Pretty soon, he become the town’s thinker, philosophizing about everything and anything — to the point where he starts getting on people’s nerves…especially Sheriff Andy Taylor. It reaches a head when Andy asks Floyd the barber to talk to him about it.

When Floyd fails, Andy goes on a tirade, telling Goober what a nuisance he’s been, saying that people are avoiding him and basically it would be better if he went back to the way he used to be.

The supposed lesson in all this is not to get too big for your britches. Remain who you are.

What’s wrong with this picture?

For me, I take it as Andy being threatened by a new authority figure. Previously, he was the one the townsfolk came to for advice. Now with Goober and his beard, Andy is no longer the top dog. He can’t stand being usurped.

Shakespeare’s famous quote: “All the world’s a stage, and all the men and women merely players.”

The moral I learned from the show is – people often force you to be who you are, through no fault of your own. It’s up to us to break free of those bonds. Be who you want to be.

Dorothy Stratten: A 2nd Look

On August 14, 1980, actress/model Dorothy Stratten was murdered by her husband Paul Snider with a fatal shotgun blast to her face. Afterward, he shot and killed himself.

What was the real motive?

Since then, there’s been a great deal of conjecture as to why he did it. Is there any new evidence? Clues? Yes.

There have been different accounts for the events leading up to the homicide/suicide.

…From “Star 80” a 1983 theatrical film,

…From Playboy magazine, where Dorothy posed from 1979-1980 becoming Playmate of the Year ’80.

…From the Village Voice article “Death of a Playmate” by Teresa Carpenter.

…And from her lover/director Peter Bogdanovich.

Briefly, let’s examine their accounts.

“Star 80’s” story details Paul Snider as the drive and ambition behind Dorothy – the man who pushes her into the limelight. Once she achieved success, those around her advised Dorothy to dump her husband. He had become an embarrassment: he was loud, pushy, arrogant, a manipulator with a savage temper.

Founder/editor of Playboy, Hugh Hefner said Paul killed Dorothy because “he was losing his meal ticket and his only claim to fame.”

The Village Voice article indicts the Playboy empire itself – saying that Snider, in a sense, enacted his own snuff film to the point where he had sex with her corpse.

Lastly, Peter Bogdanovich. Bogdanovich saw in Dorothy a new, bright and shining light – a twenty year old “Aphrodite”, an ingenue he could shape and form into a star. He had just filmed her in “They All Laughed” and was ready to do more. They were already living together.

Peter never met Dorothy’s husband which says a lot. From what he knew, he regarded Paul as “small-time” and thought he could “buy him off” with $50,000 – $100,000 in order to start his own talent agency.

What really happened. It’s true Paul Snider was sleazy, an ex-pimp from Vancouver who was using Dorothy to become rich and famous. It’s also true those higher up on the food chain sought to get rid of him. Hugh Hefner, unwisely, barred Snider from the Playboy Mansion, three days before her murder. Peter Bogdanovich advised Dorothy to cut all ties with her husband, financial and otherwise. A poster Snider had made of her was not approved by his decision. He described it as “garish and tacky.” This was, in my opinion, the beginning of the end, as Snider, who knew his marriage was in trouble, at least sought to manage her. Dorothy felt sorry for her husband, knew he was outmatched by big-league Hollywood and wanted to support him.

In the summer of 1980, rumor had spread of the Bogdanovich-Stratten affair. Likewise, Snider was aware of it. He had her followed by a detective.

In August 1980, Dorothy made plans for a divorce. She had moved in with Peter Bogdanovich, but she wanted to speak with Paul first. Alone. Peter hired a lawyer for her who asked for a flat $7,500 divorce settlement. [This statement was found in her purse.] Snider, who thought he’d hit the a million dollar jackpot with his new wife was being cut off with what I’m sure he thought was chump-change. This is what I believe sent him over the edge…being sent back to Canada with no wife, and not enough money to last him beyond a few months. The disgrace.

Whose idea was it for that $7,500? Bogdanovich? The lawyer? Whomever it was, was the catalyst.

After Paul Snider killed his wife, it’s presumed he raped her, then killed himself. The rape is an assumption. No one knows if she agreed to it or if this occurred after death. (A bloody hand-print was found on her buttocks.) A bondage device may or may not have been used.

What’s now known is that Paul Snider found a phone number in his now deceased wife’s purse – the phone number for Polly Platt, Peter’s ex-wife. At four p.m., he called it, demanding to know where Bogdanovich was. Platt refused to tell him and hung up. This is proof Snider waited for at least four hours for Peter, wrongly assuming he knew where Dorothy was. Peter, in fact, did not know where Dorothy was until six when her sister Louise told him. He did not learn of her death until 11:45 p.m. when Hefner phoned him.

More than likely Dorothy Stratten had the premonition Paul might want to kill Peter, when she told him it was finally over and that she sacrificed herself for him.

Regrets. Peter Bogdanovich states he couldn’t imagine anybody hurting Dorothy because he couldn’t imagine hurting her himself. This seems incredibly naïve. Looking back, he wishes he’s let Snider have the “damned poster to stop his mounting fury.” So why didn’t he? Why did Hefner and Bogdanovich go out of their way to humiliate Snider?

In 1981, Bogdanovich ceased his friendship with Hugh Hefner and four years later, partially blamed “Hef” for Dorothy’s death by “establishing a publication which degrades women.” (What he called “the fourth side of the triangle.”) Additionally, Peter alleged a coerced sexual encounter with Hefner and Stratten in the mansion’s grotto. (Based on the account of Patrick Curtis, who later recanted.)

In 1983, Peter would also condemn “Star 80” which cast Muriel Hemingway who looks nothing like her. The film centers more around Paul Snider, played with charismatic aplomb by Eric Roberts.

Peter Bogdanovich’s character (barely there) is made to look weak and foolish. The Dorothy character, according to him was made to appear as “the dumb blonde of a thousand fictions” and contained none of the charm and beauty of the real woman.

In 1985, Dorothy’s sister Louise married Peter which ended in divorce in 2003. Louise stated publicly that she didn’t blame anyone for her sister’s death, except Paul Snider.

Elvis Suicide?

Since August 16, 1977, the death of singer/actor Elvis Presley has stirred up controversy – controversy that still exists today. Originally, the coroner stated that Elvis died from “cardiac arrhythmia” (a heart attack.) In 1979, ABC’s Geraldo Rivera reported that Elvis died from a drug overdose caused by a combination of 10+ drugs found in his system. (PolyPharmacy.) Later, Elvis’ stepbrother David Stanley made the claim that Elvis said shortly before his death that the next time he saw him, it would be on a “higher plane.” Of all the death theories, which holds up?

One. Natural Causes. It’s true that at the age of 42, Elvis was grossly overweight: six feet, 250 lbs. Could this have led to his heart attack? Unlikely. Elvis died while reading in his bathroom.

Two. Overdose. On that last day, Elvis bloodstream became a witches brew of pain killers, anti-anxiety pills, Quaaludes, sleeping pills, and over the counter medication. How or why was this allowed to happen? Unfortunately, Elvis’ best protectors had left. His longtime girlfriend Linda Thompson gave up in Dec. 1976. Elvis bodyguards Red and Sonny West were fired. His new caretakers, including supposed fiancee Ginger Alden and his stepbrothers, Ricky and David, were not as diligent. Left to his own devices, Elvis could, whether meaning to or not, overdose himself.

Three. Suicide. It must be remembered that David Stanley was using the new suicide expose to make money on a proposed tell-all book. This does not mean he made it up; however, he could have. Did Elvis have just cause to kill himself? Would he? Weighing the pros and cons…

PROS

One. “Elvis: What Happened?” a scandalous paperback book which revealed his drug addiction had been released 16 days prior.

Two. Declining record sales. Elvis’ last major album was in 1973, four years earlier.

Three. Depression about age, weight and his betrayals.

Four. Unable to perform like he used to.

Five. Money problems, lawsuits, and a failed investment in a racquetball court company.

CONS

One. Elvis behavior didn’t especially indicate suicide. He spoke of the upcoming tour and played racquetball earlier that morning.

Two. Elvis may have been planning to marry Ginger Alden.

Three. Elvis’ daughter Lisa Marie was in the house at the time.

Four. Elvis wanted to prove to his fans that he could still sing like he used to.

Five. Elvis’ fan base remained loyal, cheering him on no matter what.

While there isn’t enough proof of suicide, it’s possible. The theory that Elvis saved up his “attacks” as he called his packets of pills and then took them all at once would have killed him. The doubt left is this – It’s based on someone profiting from the story.

Accidental overdose? Also possible. Elvis had become so used to taking drugs for so long that he got careless and finally it was too much for his body to take.

Conclusion. I believe it’s a combination of factors. Elvis’ people weren’t paying attention to him that day. Elvis’ lifestyle, created by himself, was a form of slow suicide. No one said no to the King, supplying him endlessly with too much food, too much medication, too much of everything. In the end, he could take no more.

Released in the summer of ’77, “Moody Blue” would become the final record of singer Elvis Presley, during his lifetime. It’s a patchwork of songs from 1977 (live recordings), 1976 (the last of the “Jungle Room” sessions) and 1974 (“Let Me Be There”.)

In January 1977, Elvis was set to finish the recordings, then backed off at the last moment. [Reason given: a throat infection, although it was probably due to an argument with his then-girlfriend Ginger Alden.]

“Moody Blue” was pressed in a translucent blue vinyl. A few copies were done in traditional black. The single “Moody Blue” was black: however, five copies are blue. (Collector’s items.)

The second single “Way Down” was issued and was still for sale at the time of his death (Aug. 16) and went all the way to number one in England. [The British being some of Elvis’ most loyal fans, despite the fact that he never went there.]

“Moody Blue’s” version of “Unchained Melody” is not to be confused with the one contained on “Elvis – The Great Performances”. [Originally cut from Elvis in Concert”.] “Unchained Melody” would also be released as a single, backed by “Softly As I Leave You” (previously unreleased.)

“Let Me Be There” (thrown in from a 1974 live album) seems misplaced – sung by a young-sounding Elvis and contrasts with other songs.

The first three songs are live recordings added from Elvis’ spring tours – RCA’s only way of finishing it.

“It’s Easy for You”, the last song on side 2, appears to be a message for his ex-wife Priscilla, as many as his songs were during their separation. “I had a wife, I had children, I gave them all away.”

Interesting side note: the odd album cover was a printing error. RCA intended this one for the cassette. That’s why the photo of Elvis is only three inches tall. Only three of the correct album covers still exist.

Academy Award winning actor Kevin Spacey, accused of eighteen counts of sexual misconduct, released a bizarre video on YouTube – Christmas Eve 2019. (Title KTWK – “Kill Them with Kindness”.) One day after, Norwegian author Ari Behn, who accused Spacey of molesting him in 2007, committed suicide. (Dec. 25.)

Earlier this year, two more accusers were killed. Whistle-blower Linda Culkin, age 59, was struck down and killed by an automobile. (Feb. 25.)

The third accuser, a massage therapist known anonymously as “John Doe” died from unspecified causes. (Sept. 18.) His death occurred one month before Spacey’s trial was to begin.

Natalie Wood Death Probe

Los Angeles Morgue Files: Actress Natalie Wood DROWNS in ... On the morning of November 29, 1981, the body of actress Natalie Wood was found floating off the coast of Catalina Island. What happened and why? To make sense of the circumstances of her death, we must first analyze what led up to it.

Several days before, he had fallen from his bed, striking his head on a night-table. Holden, intoxicated, did not realize the extant of his injury and bled to death.

Ms. Powers acting partner was Robert Wagner, husband of Natalie Wood. Wagner spent time “comforting” Powers during her mourning period. Miss Wood did not approve.

See the source image During this time frame, Natalie was filming “Brainstorm”, a big-budget, sci-fi film for MGM. Her co-star was Christopher Walken. There had been rumors that Wood and Walken were having an affair during filming, Wagner, aware of these rumors, hired spies at MGM to watch them. Natalie denied all. Her invitation to Chris Walken on that Thanksgiving weekend was to prove to her husband that she wasn’t having an affair.

Natalie Wood – CBS San Francisco Friday, Nov. 27. The pleasure cruise begins aboard their yacht known as the “Splendour”. Although the tension between Wagner and Walken was obvious, it was not until the next day when things became ugly.

Later, aboard the Splendour, there was a discussion about acting. Wagner remarked that he missed his wife during the filming of “Brainstorm”. Walken responded that an actor must dedicate their life to their craft and felt Natalie should do likewise. This drew a strong reaction from Wagner, setting off an argument, culminating with him smashing a wine bottle on the table, saying, “What are you trying to do? Fuck my wife?”

Natalie stood up and said that she would not stand for that kind of behavior and left for her room. A contrite Wagner told Captain Dennis Davern that he would apologize to his wife. Instead, Davern heard a violent argument. (It’s rumored one of Natalie earrings was found with part of her earlobe still affixed.) Next, Capt. Davern witnessed them above board, still arguing. Wagner screamed: “GET OFF MY FUCKING BOAT!”

Natalie, still dressed for bed, wore a down jacket over her nightgown. Was Wood being ejected off the boat? Is this when the “accident” happened?

What happened then is open for conjecture. Davern heard the argument suddenly stop. Some believe Natalie accidentally fell overboard when she pulled away from her husband. Others think she fell after he slapped her. Regardless, this is when she fell in the ocean between 11 and 11:15 p.m.

Wagner had been forcing Wood off the “Splendour”, sending her off on his dinghy, (known as the “Valiant”), when she fell.

Reportedly, Walken heard the screaming and came out to help Wood. Wagner grabbed him by the arm and marched him back to his room, telling him to mind his own business.

On a nearby vessel, witness Marilyn Wayne heard someone screaming for help in the ocean. “Help me, I’m drowning!” She heard another voice say “We’re coming to get you!”

Conflicting stories remain. Wagner said, (according to conflicting accounts): “I’m going to leave her in the water for a while and teach her a lesson.” Then, he sat down, passed out and after waking up, realized his wife had drifted off to sea.

This is when Robert Wagner’s actions become criminal. Rather than try to save his wife, he does just the opposite. He tells Capt. Davern to search the boat, knowing she’s not there. He won’t let Davern turn on the searchlight because he either doesn’t want to find her or fears “bad publicity”. He delays reporting it to the Coast Guard for hours. Why?

I suspect Wagner thought Wood would turn him in for spousal abuse and attempted murder. This would mean prison and a ruined career. So, he let her drown.

Back in 1981, the police and the mainstream media didn’t do their job, reporting her death as an “accidental drowning”.

In 2011, the case was reopened because of the witness accounts by Dennis Davern and Marilyn Wayne. Davern claims that Wagner paid him off over the years to keep his silent. Since that time, his conscience would not allow him to lie anymore and that Robert Wagner’s actions (or inaction) led to his wife’s death.

Mr. Wagner refuses to give out any new information to the police and stands by his story: that Natalie Wood fell off their yacht while trying to board or tie down their dinghy. Many do not believe this story as Wood had trouble operating the complicated engine aboard the “Valiant”. Additionally, she was afraid of “dark water” and would not go out on the ocean alone.

Christopher Walken refuses to speak about what happened, except for those statements he gave to the police.

The fact remains that Robert Wagner lied about what happened. He lied about how the wine bottle was broken, saying it was because of “rough seas.” He lied about their argument, saying it was about “politics”. He lied about when she fell off the boat.

Over the years, Wagner’s story has changed a bit. He admits breaking the wine bottle in a rage. He now states that she may have been trying to board the “Valiant” to get away from their argument. And yet, how does any of this make sense? If she wanted to leave, why not ask Capt. Davern to take her back to shore? Or why not end the “pleasure cruise” and return? I suspect Mr. Wagner blames his wife for her own death because it was her invitation to Christopher Walken that led to the drunken argument which caused her death.

In 2012, Natalie’s official cause of death was changed from “accidental drowning” to “drowning and other undermined factors.” In 2018, Robert Wagner was named “a person of interest” by the police.

It would be many years before the widower would see his wife in her last movie “Brainstorm”, which he did not like. That speaks for itself.

“Careless Love”: Peter Guralnick’s second volume on the life and death of Elvis Presley.

In 1975, Elvis was offered to play opposite Barbra Streisand in “A Star is Born” (1976.) Initially accepted, Col. Tom Parker was outraged that Streisand would go to Elvis first without consulting him. The deal: Elvis was offered $500,000 plus 10% of the profits after the break-even point. The Colonel’s counteroffer: $1 million with 50% of the profits. This effectively ruined the deal. You could mark this as the beginning of the end for Elvis Presley. With no challenges left; without a serious film role, everything went downhill from there.

1973-1977: It was the last four years of his life where his addiction grew to out-of-control proportions. Whatever the cause, (some cite his ’73 divorce), Elvis’ death is a reminder of the dangers of drugs, prescribed or otherwise.

June 1977. After a four year absence from television, Elvis appears in two videotaped shows videotaped for CBS, ultimately titled “Elvis in Concert”. The program aired twice and has not been seen since, except for bootleg discs, tapes and uploads. Elvis’ estate refuses to acknowledge it. This, I believe, is a mistake.

At the time of death, Elvis had fourteen drugs in his system, most notably Quaalude’s and Codeine. [I.E., probable cause of death being polypharmacy; the deadly interaction of these drugs, mixed together. The official cause of death was a heart attack.]

What can one say about “Elvis in Concert”? Elvis biographer Peter Guralnick writes “It is almost unbearable to listen to or to watch the obliteration not just of beauty, but of the memory of beauty, and in its place sheer, stark terror. It was like he was saying ‘Okay, here I am, I’m dying, fuck it.'”

“My Way” is the only song used from the first recorded show (the rest judged unsuitable for broadcast.) A Sinatra standard, “My Way’s” lyrics pretty much capture the situation at hand. “And now the end is near and so I face the final curtain…” (YouTube video uploaded by Alexander Eriksson Elvis.)

“Unchained Melody” was originally not shown until years later in “Elvis – The Great Performances”. Peter Guralnick writes…

“Unchained Melody would prove too raw for network broadcast. At the end of the show, Elvis sat down at the piano and with Charlie Hodge holding a hand mike, launched into “Unchained Melody” in which he seemed to invest every fiber of his being. Hunched over the piano, his face framed in a helmet of blue-black hair from which sweat sheets down over pale, swollen cheeks, Elvis looks like nothing so much as a creature out of a Hollywood monster film – and yet we are with him all the way as he struggles to achieve grace. What impresses me most is Elvis determination to get through this song no matter what. Some have remarked that it’s a wonder he didn’t die of a heart attack while singing it.

August 16, 1977. Elvis Presley is found by his girlfriend Ginger Alden, collapsed by his toilet, already dead. The last thing he tried to do is crawl for help to the bedroom where she slept.
