Lisa Marie Presley – Family Curse

Lisa Marie Presley with her eldest daughter Riley and her only son Benjamin

“Ben never had a fucking chance.”  Lisa Marie Presley quote.

It would seem Benjamin Keough had it all.  The only grandson of Elvis.  Beloved by his mother Lisa Marie.  Why would he kill himself on July 12, 2020?  “From Here to the Great Unknown” is unclear as to why.  At the time, LMP had become addicted to opioids, prescribed for her after the cesarian birth of her twins.  Like daughter, like father.  According to co-author, Riley Keough, Ben was keeping his mental turmoil well hidden.

Shortly before his suicide, Lisa suffered from convulsions and withdrawal symptoms.  Ben couldn’t handle it.  As close as Elvis was to his mother, the same could be said for them.

The book doesn’t describe how Benjamin killed himself.  By other accounts, Ben locked himself in the bathroom and shot himself in the head.  His girlfriend tried to stop him, but he was out of control.

Lisa never got over it.  Family thought she would die.  For the first six months, Lisa thought she would die.  Time doesn’t heal all wounds.  What kept her going were the twins and a plan to speak out publicly on how to prevent suicide.

2022 was an eventful year.  The movie “Elvis” was a big hit receiving eight Oscar nominations.  LMP began to come out of hibernation.

On January 8, 2023, Lisa Marie appeared at Graceland on Elvis’s birthday, greeting and speaking with fans.

January 10, 2023, the Golden Globes.  At Lisa’s final appearance, she appeared frail and gaunt as she balanced herself on Jerry Schilling’s arm.  The highlight of the evening was when Austin Butler won Best Actor for a Musical or Comedy for “Elvis”.   Lisa and her mother beamed with pride.  After all the years, Elvis was finally getting critical recognition.

Last Day.  Lisa Marie texted her ex-husband Danny Keough complaining of stomach pains; asking if he could bring her Tums.  Her housekeeper found her collapsed on the bedroom floor.  Her ex called 9-1-1.   It was a heart attack – the result of bariatric surgery, a drastic method of keeping her weight down.  Lisa was tired of being referred to as “fat” by the press.

She remained in a coma…until another heart attack.  It was all over.

Lisa Marie, Ben and Elvis and his parents are all buried in the Meditation Garden in Graceland.

Lisa Marie Presley’s Last Words (Part 2) – Michael Jackson

They were married for a year and a half:  the “King of Pop” wed “The King’s daughter”.  Of her four husbands, M.J.’s superstar status reminded her most of her father…but, that’s when the similarities end.  Back in 1994, the MSM called it a fake marriage done for publicity.  And yet, they were both already famous.  What was their raison d’etre?

As it states in “From Here to the Great Unknown”, Lisa wanted to “fix” Michael.  M.J. wanted a child.  What better gene pool than Presley?

In 1993, child molestation charges were made against Jackson.  Lisa remarked in an interview that she never believed the allegations and that she would’ve hung him from a tree, if they were true.  At the time, Michael checked himself into a rehab in Switzerland for his addiction to pain-killers.  (Something Lisa could well identify with.)

M.J. paid his accuser $20 million to settle the case.  On T.V., Michael said he was innocent.  He told Lisa he was a virgin and that his relationship with Brooke Shields was fake.

MAY 26, 1994

Michael Jackson and Lisa Marie Presley marry in the Dominican Republic

The Jackson family got along well with Lisa as well as with her children from another marriage, Riley and Ben Keough.  But when it came time for a Michael Jr. or little Lisa, Lisa didn’t want to commit.  The rift in the marriage began.

Eventually, M.J. would go on to have three children, two with Debbie Rowe (Paris and Prince) and one (Bigi formerly known as “Blanket”) with an unknown surrogate.

During the Jackson-Presley marriage, drug use re-emerged.  It began with pain medication he first received for scalp burns that occurred during a Pepsi commercial.

Michael had his own anesthesiologist.  This meant he could legally obtain the drugs of his choice.  At the time, Lisa was very anti-drug, knew he was lying and told him to stop.  But, he couldn’t and wouldn’t.

1994 MTV Awards

While on stage, Michael tells the audience, “And they said this wouldn’t last…” and kisses Lisa Marie.  Many said this proved it was a fake marriage because she stiffens and pulls away from him.  “The kiss”, to her, was a ploy for the press to make him appear normal.  She felt used.

Lisa heard Michael was ready to file for divorce, so she filed first.  Later, she discovered that he really didn’t want a divorce.  The marriage officially ended on January 18, 1996.

Michael Jackson and Lisa Marie Presley stayed in contact until 1997.  In their last phone conversation, he said, “You were right.  Everybody around me wants to kill me.”

In those final years, M.J. tried to break away from the record contracts.  Sony owned him.  On June 25, 2009, Michael Jackson died from an overdose of Propofol, while his doctor Conrad Murray was in the next room.

As with her father, Lisa Marie stayed by her ex-husband’s coffin for a long time.

Lisa Marie Presley’s Last Words (Part 1)

From Here to the Great Unknown: A Memoir: The Autobiography - Presley, Lisa Marie, Keough, Lisa ...

Autobiography of Lisa Marie Presley, published posthumously.

“My music wasn’t that successful.  I didn’t finish high school.  I’m not beautiful.  I’m not good enough — but, I’m a great mother.”  Quote from Lisa Marie Presley.

Shortly before Lisa Marie Presley’s untimely death at the age of 54, she had been working on her memoirs with her eldest daughter, Riley Keough.  Lisa had procrastinated long enough.  Riley would help her finish it.  Unfortunately, death stepped in.  What we have is an unfinished autobiography.  Luckily, Lisa left behind audio recordings for the book.  Finally, we get a true account of what really happened to Elvis Presley and his daughter.

Elvis marriage began on May 1, 1967

Elvis’s wife Priscilla became pregnant soon after their 1967 marriage.  Priscilla wasn’t happy about it, knowing about the weight gain; knowing other women wanted the “King”.  She would gain little weight living on a diet of apples and eggs.

February 1, 1968. Lisa Marie is born.

Lisa considered life at Graceland as the happiest time of her life.  Elvis spoiled her, loved her, gave her everything she could ever want.  They loved each other unconditionally.

Shortly before their separation. December 1971.

After birth, Elvis suddenly saw his wife as a mother – and their sex life declined.  This would spell trouble in their marriage that would end in 1973.

Elvis and Priscilla’s divorce hearing, 1973.

When her parents separated in 1972, Lisa went to live with her mother in Los Angeles and she hated it.   Lisa describes her mom as “chilly”.  She knew she was unwanted.  Although Priscilla loved her daughter in her own way, Lisa could be a Hellraiser.   This resulted in a series of boarding schools.

Legally, Elvis shared custody.  On the holidays and during summer, Lisa would return to Graceland, “Paradise” if you will.

Elvis would spoil her endlessly with gifts, trips to the amusement park and plane rides on his private jet named the “Lisa Marie”.

TROUBLE IN PARADISE

Lisa could see that her dad’s health was in decline.  Overweight and heavily dependent on drugs, Elvis would knock himself out and sleep for days.  Guilt played a big part of it.  The death of  his mother Gladys was caused by her worry over him being drafted into the Army.  The end of his marriage was caused by him refusing to settle down, refusing to change.

Elvis with Linda Thompson

Lisa writes that she loved Linda Thompson, Elvis’s main girlfriend from 1973 – 1976.

Ginger Alden with Elvis

She would be replaced by Ginger Alden in 1977.  Lisa writes that she thought Ginger didn’t love Elvis; that she was playing him.  Others in his inner circle said the same thing.

AUGUST 16, 1977.  Lisa woke up in the early afternoon with the feeling that something was terribly wrong.  Going to see, Elvis was already dead on the bathroom floor.  The head of the “Memphis Mafia”,  Joe Esposito began CPR.  Ginger pulled Lisa out of the room.  Lisa fought hard to see her dad.  She would see him taken out on a stretcher.

The end of Elvis would begin a new way of life for his daughter.  She too would begin a singing career, take drugs, get married and have children.

On occasion, Elvis visited Lisa in her dreams.  Lisa believed they were real visitations, writing that she tried to warn him of his overdose and heart attack.  Elvis replied, “It’s already happened.”

The dreams ended when her son, Benjamin Keough was born.

Lisa Marie’s only son, Benjamin Keough.

Elvis Suicide? (Final Chapter)

August 15-16, 1977.  Elvis Presley was in preparation for his next tour beginning on the 17th in Portland, Maine.

Advance ticket for the concert that never was.

Elvis and his then sometime live-in girlfriend Ginger Alden had some dental work done.

Returning to Graceland, “El” played racquetball on an added-on court.  Afterward, he sang a few songs, one being “Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain”.

Elvis and Ginger retired to their bedroom.  According to Ginger, Elvis proposed to her announcing a Christmas wedding.  There were several motives.

One.  Elvis wanted a son.

Two.  Elvis wanted his ex-wife Priscilla to know he didn’t need her anymore.

Three.  This was being done to combat rumors the “King” was living a Howard Hughes-type existence, living in solitude, dependent on servants and a large supply of drugs.   “Elvis:  What Happened?”, a tell-all book by his fired bodyguards had been released on August 1st.  “El” had already read an advance copy and was planning a rebuttal – an autobiography of his own titled, “Walk a Mile in My Shoes”.

According to his chef, Elvis had another girl ready to go with him for the start of the tour.  Reason:  Ginger Alden was his first modern woman.  She refused to be molded, frequently stood him up, and at times, seemed uninterested.  The other girl was a ploy to make Ginger jealous.  If all went according to plan, “El” would publicly announce their engagement on the last day of the tour in Memphis.

DRUGS.  Elvis’s stepbrother Rick Stanley theorized that Elvis had saved all of his sleeping medication (three packets) and took them all at once for a fatal overdose.  True or not, drugs accumulate over time.  The narcotics taken (along with the pain medication from the dentist) may have had a cumulative effect.  Intentional or not, the ten drugs found in  his system, built up to a fatal O.D.

COCAINE.  No cocaine was found in Elvis’s system, but according to those around him, he was hooked on it.  The habit began around 1970.  Elvis began wearing sunglasses all the time to cover up his glazed expression.

(Above.  Example of a drug-fueled Elvis singing “A Whole Lot-ta Shakin’ Goin’ On”)

1977.  Elvis was under contract with RCA to record several albums a year.  For that year, only “Moody Blue” had been released, containing his final studio recordings and a few added live songs.  In January, Elvis refused to finish the album because Ginger failed to appear at his recording session.  In June, a live TV special was recorded titled “Elvis in Concert”.  (Released posthumously in October.)  It was the number one rated program of the week.  After a rerun in 1978, it wasn’t aired again except for pirated versions.

STUCK IN A RUT.  As in the 1960’s with the movies, Elvis found himself trapped in a never-ending tour singing the same songs.  A martial-arts documentary was abandoned.  A chance to star with Barbra Streisand in “A Star is Born” fell through because Col. Parker made unrealistic demands.  (Star billing, $1 million upfront and songs from his own composers.)

Elvis continued to sing saying he wanted to bring happiness to his fans.  The King was also being sued, losing money in a bad investment deal and hadn’t saved anything for the future.  Sadly, by age 42, his performances were suffering.  HIs memory was fading, he was unable to move because of his weight and he knew it.

ANALYSIS.  While suicide is not impossible, I believe Elvis’s death was accidental; the causes being a combination of drugs, being grossly overweight and too many years of neglect.  Ginger Alden should have been more alert to the fact of his failing health.  Previous girlfriend Linda Thompson remarked, “It didn’t happen on my watch.”  By August 1977, Elvis needed 24-hour care and a full-time nurse.

Following his death, a resurgence of interest began in his music.  Daughter Lisa Marie would also record three albums before her untimely death from the aftereffects of bariatric surgery.

Elvis Death

The last photo of Elvis Presley taken at the gates of Graceland.

August 16, 1977.  The first person to see Elvis Presley dead was his fiancée Ginger Alden.  It had been six hours since she had last checked on him.  (Elvis former girlfriend Linda Thompson would not have let this happen.)   Elvis was found face down in front of the toilet.  Ginger assumed he had fallen into a drug-induced sleep.  Turning his head to see his purple face and his tongue caught between his teeth proved otherwise.

feelnumb.com on Tumblr: 39 Years Ago Today: Elvis Presley died in his upstairs bathroom at Graceland (FOLLOW LINK IN BIO TO SEE HIS BEDROOM & BATHROOM...

The head of Elvis’s security force Joe Esposito was called in.  Turning Elvis over, a gasp of air escaped.  Joe, too, wrongly thought his boss might still be alive.  The fact was Elvis had been dead for over two hours.  Rigor mortis had already set in.

An ambulance was called.  Joe tried CPR and mouth-to-mouth resuscitation.  The household staff became alert to the emergency.  Worst of all, so did Elvis’s daughter Lisa Marie who tried to run in the bathroom.  Ginger blocked her, locking the door.

The ambulance team was told by Elvis half-brother Rick Stanley that it might be an overdose.  (He should know.  He, along with Elvis’s dentist administered the fatal medications.)  It took five men to place Elvis on the gurney.  The King had ballooned to 255 pounds.

Elvis’s doctor, Dr. “Nick” Nichopoulos and Joe Esposito boarded the ambulance.  Ginger, who had finally made up her mind to go, had the back of the ambulance door shut in her face.

Dr. “Nick” feverishly worked at reviving the corpse that rocked the world.

Meanwhile, back at Graceland, Ginger consoled eight year old Lisa saying that her Daddy would be all right.  Others prayed.

Adrenalin was injected into the heart in a futile attempt to resurrect the fallen King.  An ambulance worker said it looked like Elvis was already dead.  These desperate attempts at life soon faded.  Elvis Presley – the King of Rock and Roll was pronounced dead from cardiac arrhythmia at 3:30 p.m.

Col. Parker with Elvis

Col. Tom Parker would continue to manage Elvis’s legacy, collecting 75% instead of 50%.  This would continue until Lisa Marie reached maturity; whereupon, it was revealed that the Colonel had been scamming the Presley family for over thirty years.

Ginger Alden was shut out from the Presley family after appearing in an exploitation film titled “Living Legend:  The King of Rock and Roll”.  In 2014, she would write a book about their affair titled “Elvis and Ginger”.

Priscilla (2023)

“Priscilla” is based on “Elvis and Me”, Priscilla Presley’s version of her life with Elvis.

Q.  WOULD LISA MARIE PRESLEY HAVE APPROVED OF “PRISCILLA”?   SHE WOULD READ THE SCREENPLAY FIVE MONTHS BEFORE HER DEATH.  HER COMMENT TO DIRECTOR AND SCREENWRITER SOFIA COPPOLA IN THE CAPTION BELOW.

A. “MY FATHER COMES OFF AS A PREDATOR AND MANIPULATIVE.  I READ THIS AND SEE YOUR SHOCKING VENGEFUL AND CONTEMPTUOUS PERSPECTIVE AND I DON’T UNDERSTAND WHY.”

Executive Producer of Priscilla is Elvis’s ex-wife Priscilla Presley

Writer/director Sofia Coppola

REVIEW.  (CONTAINS SPOILERS)  The first third of Priscilla is the part that works.  Director/screenwriter Sofia Coppola captures the time, the place and the characters.  She has the eye and is keen on detail.

1959.  Elvis, soon after the death of his mother, meets Priscilla Beaulieu in Germany while in the Army.  The wound left open by his mother’s passing leaves him open and vulnerable.  He sees in Priscilla (believe it or not), a new mother figure – someone he can cast all his pain and sorrow.

Cailee Spaeny Receives Golden Globe Nomination for Best Dramatic ...

Actress Cailey Spaeny as Priscilla is the film.  Jacob Elordi has the look of Elvis and is able to carry it off in the beginning.  But, this is Priscilla’s story and is Elvis is forced to take a back seat.  There is very little of him singing.  What we have here is a more personal story.

Cailee Spaeny as Priscilla

In 1961, Elvis talks Priscilla’s parents into her letting her come live with him in Graceland.  This will be her new home until their separation in 1972.

Priscilla begins to falter by making Elvis too downbeat and gloomy.  Yes, that was a side to him.  Why is he always like that?  Those who knew him called him fun-loving, always laughing, someone who played practical jokes.  Elordi’s Elvis should have been a mortician.

Jacob Elordi as Elvis Presley

Priscilla’s “Elvis” studies philosophy and refuses to have sex with her.  All of this is true.  Elvis was old fashioned at heart and wants his bride to remain a virgin and so she did until their marriage in 1967.  Nine months to the day after, Lisa Marie is born.

Here we come to the final third, where the relationship begins to fray.  It should be made clear – both cheated on each other.  But Priscilla focuses on Elvis’s infidelity.

Following Lisa Marie’s birth, Elvis expected Priscilla to be a stay-at-home mom while he went on tour.  That was not the life she wanted.  Peculiarly, Elvis imparts another rule – that he doesn’t like having sex with a woman who has had children.  Where does that leave Priscilla?

The film barely touches on her affair with Mike Stone, her karate instructor.  This affair began in 1970.  Elvis remained ignorant of it until one of his bodyguards told him after their separation.

December 1971.  Priscilla tells Elvis she doesn’t love him anymore.  And it is over.

Dolly’s Parton’s “I Will Always Love You” ends the film:  a song submitted to Elvis back in 1975.  It would fall through because Dolly wouldn’t give up the copyright to Col. Tom Parker.

The film’s strongest points are the direction (Sofia Coppola is a favorite of mine) and the cinematography by Phillippe Le Sourd.  It has that glossy sheen.  There are many beautiful camera shots.

Weaker points:  Elvis isn’t always portrayed in a good light.  His fans may not like this film.  Feminists will argue that – in the end – his wife was right to leave him.  Others will argue that Elvis gave her everything and that she betrayed him.

It would have been interesting to show that final year – 1977.  Elvis and Priscilla still maintained a relationship.  The last thing he said (not in the movie) was that they’d reunite in another place and in another time.

Elvis Suicide? (Part 3)

Elvis Presley, Rest in Peace

Proponents of the Elvis Presley suicide theory have a strong case.  It’s the timing of when it happened, a few weeks after the release of “Elvis – What Happened?”, a tell-all paperback written by his former bodyguards who swear their boss took drugs.

Elvis was preparing for a new tour, beginning in Maine.  He believed audience might turn on him or ask questions about the book.

Elvis’ relationship with fiancée Ginger Alden was faltering.  Many within his inner circle thought she really didn’t love him.

His depression about his failed marriage and the death of his mother.  (Elvis’ father said she basically worried herself to death about her son.)

Continued lawsuits involving investments in a racquetball court franchise and assault & battery charges for the actions of his over-zealous bodyguards.

Elvis poses with daughter, Lisa-Marie

Elvis greatest joy – his nine year old daughter Lisa-Marie was staying at the house temporarily.  But, all he could do was spoil her with gifts, allowing her to do anything she pleased.

Elvis’ stepbrother David Stanley claims two days before his death, he told him the next time he saw him he would be “in a higher place and on a different plane.”  David didn’t know what he meant until August 16.

On that fateful day, the suicide theory contends Elvis saved up his medications – called “attacks” – and then took all three doses at once, causing a fatal reaction.  His only chance for living, Ginger Alden, slept in the adjoining bedroom, unknowing.

It’s hard to say whether Elvis would’ve have wanted to go out like that.  (Dead by his toilet.)  At the time, his future was constant tour dates.  As can be seen in “Elvis in Concert” (1977), his heart was no longer in it.  He refused to record in the studio.  There were no more movie deals.  What was left?

Elvis: sick and tired of being sick and tired.

Rumor:  The leader of the Memphis Mafia Joe Esposito supposedly confessed shortly before his death that he burned Elvis’ suicide note.  If true, the note stated the reasons for why he did it…that it was because of his inability to quit taking drugs, his weight and Priscilla, the little girl he met in Germany who broke his heart.
